Interview with Grigoris Vlachos (Marauder) [ENGLISH-GREEK]
Prologue: Marauder is a Greek Heavy Metal band with great history behind them, an also one of the few that are still active and productive. With only a few days left before the release of their new record “Elegy Of Blood”, we exchange a few words with the good friend and drummer of the band, Grigoris, about the bands history, the new record and their upcoming concert. (This is an interview that I did on my own, but on behalf of Burst.gr)
Elias: Hello Grigoris, we have a new Marauder record coming and a concert. But let’s go back to the beginning for a while. Tell us a few words about the bands history.
Grigoris: Marauder was founded back in 1990 from Andreas Tsaousis and Giorgos Sofronas, the bands 2 guitarists who are the only ones that have remained from the bands original lineup. We have released 2 Demos, ''Try To Live'' and ''The Die Is Cast'' as well as 5 CD's, ''Sense Of Metal'' {1997}, ''1821'' {2000}, ''Life?'' {2004}, ''Face The Mirror'' {2008} and the new one ''Elegy Of Blood'' which will be out on May 15th from the Cypriot company Pitch Black Records. In “Face The Mirror” and “Elegy Of Blood” we can see the bands current lineup that has been together since 2004. Except Andreas and Giorgos, there is also me in drums, Alexandros Kostarakos in vocals and Thodoris Paralis in bass. A very important part of Marauder’s history is the countless live shows that we have done all these years and there are somehow trademarks of the band.
Elias: You are one of the strongest and most recognizable names in Greek Heavy Metal. How do you see the whole thing, now and then?
Grigoris: Look, as far as Greek Metal is concerned, I always believed that we have great bands from every Metal genre, but especially the last few years it make me very happy to see that many people are putting a lot of effort in the production of their CD’s resulting into great works from many bands. This was probably the only bad thing compared to the past, the production area. I’m sure that we have a long way ahead of us as long as the people keep supporting our efforts and the concerts from everyone.
Elias: If I’m not mistaken, 2 of your records were out of print and they’ve been rereleased from Eat Metal Records, plus some bonus tracks. I believe that you’re one of the very few Greek bands that have done this. Do people still support the whole thing or are things worse than they used to be?
Grigoris: Yes, it was ''Sense Of Metal'' and ''1821'' that have been rereleased, as well as ''1821'' which was also released in Vinyl from ''Iron On Iron''. I do see some movement going around here and abroad, people are beginning to like buying CD’s and Vinyl again although the whole thing had stopped for a while due to downloading.
Elias: Despite the fact that you’ve had several lineup changes throughout the years, you remained very tight as a band and productive. Do you wish to share a few words with us about the time that you joined the band and about your new record?
Grigoris: Andreas and Giorgos kept the band alive all of these years, despite the countless problems, because they simply loved playing Heavy Metal!!! The End!!! That’s how we came in touch back in 2004 and became tight as a band but above all as friends, and that’s how we will carry on, all together with a common purpose. Love for Marauder and Heavy Metal!!! The new record is named 'Elegy Of Blood', it will be released from Pitch Black at May 15th and I believe it’s the strongest and most epic record we’ve written since ''1821''. It is considered a concept album and there are references to important battles that have happened in the whole history of mankind. We have worked a lot in the compositions, as well as the production…
Elias: You’ve remained faithful to the traditional Heavy Metal sound, whatever that means for everyone, in a time when a lot of bands are constantly looking how to improve their sound with mixed results most of the times. What are your main influences right now? What is the unseen force that moves Marauder?
Grigoris: The unseen force that drives the band in everything is simply unconditional love for Heavy Metal. We are not going to change anything, we didn’t change all these years and we really have no need to do so. Our influences as people are not all that different and probably that’s why we all fit together so well in the band. After all, we’re all guys who consider classic Heavy Metal to be a way of life!!! Classic Heavy Metal endured in time and it will be around for many years to come.
Elias: There is a weird trend here in Greece among some fans, to classify traditional Heavy Metal bands as “graphical”. Do you believe that the fans of classic Heavy Metal sound are mostly narrow-minded, or that is a general matter of behaviour from the big part of the fans?
Grigoris: There’s no need of occupying ourselves with talks of graphical bands and narrow-minded people. Those who say these things don’t know how to actually enjoy this music that we are so lucky to serve and well, I pity him!!! Classics never die!!!
Elias: You’ve organized a concert for the new record at May 27th, with 4 other bands of the Greek scene. Tell us a few words about this concert. Have you organized any more concerts during the summer yet?
Grigoris: Yes, we’re going to present the new record at May 27th in “Kyttaro Club” alongside Dream Weaver, Ragenheart, Martiria from Italy and Crusade Of Steel, they’re all great bands!!! It will definitely be a very good event and I sure hope that people are going to support it. Right now, we haven’t organized any more gigs, but we are going to play a lot of concerts this year in several Greek cities, as well as abroad.
Elias: The year before last, you played in a 2-day fest in Cyprus, the Power Of The Night Festival, alongside many Greek bands as well as Ross The Boss and the late Scott Columbus. What are your memories from that festival? Is there a rise of Heavy Metal in Cyprus?
Grigoris: Ok, what can I say about the live in Cyprus? I’m a ManOwaRrior, so it was a lifelong dream to be in the same hotel with Ross and Scott, incredible people both of them… great times!!! In Cyprus they live and breathe classic Heavy Metal!!! The fest was organized perfectly from guys with passion, and Cyprus has a lot of great bands as well. There is a lot of growth in the scene there and that’s very good for them!!!
Elias: How do you see the whole Internet thing and the general philosophy of “instant information”. Is it a blessing or a curse for the bands?
Grigoris: The truth is, everyone needs the Internet nowadays, it’s very useful for bands and for music in general. You can advertise anything very quick and everyone can instantly see it, something that was very difficult in the past…
Elias: Is there something else that you wish to share with us?
Grigoris: Elias thanks for giving me the chance to say a few things about Marauder. I wish nothing but the best in all that you do. What else… Support the Greek scene!!!

Πρόλογος: Οι Marauder είναι μια ελληνική Heavy Metal μπάντα με μεγάλη ιστορία και από τις ελάχιστες που είναι ακόμα ενεργές και παραγωγικές. Λίγο πριν την κυκλοφορία του νέου τους δίσκου “Elegy Of Blood”, μιλάμε με τον φίλο και ντράμερ της μπάντας Γρηγόρη, για τη μπάντα, το νέο δίσκο και την επερχόμενη συναυλία τους.
Ηλίας: Γεια σου Γρηγόρη, έχουμε νέο δίσκο Marauder και συναυλία. Πάμε λίγο απ'την αρχή όμως. Πες μας λίγα λόγια για την ιστορία της μπάντας.
Γρηγόρης: Οι Marauder ιδρύθηκαν το 1990 από τον Ανδρέα Τσαούση και τον Γιώργο Σώφρονα τους δυο κιθαρίστες της μπάντας οι όποιοι είναι οι μονοί που παραμένουν από την αρχική σύνθεση του γκρουπ. Έχουμε κυκλοφορήσει δυο Demos τα ''Try To Live'' και ''The Die Is Cast'' όπως επίσης και πέντε Cd's τα ''Sense Of Metal'' {1997}, ''1821'' {2000}, ''Life?'' {2004}, ''Face The Mirror'' {2008} και το καινούργιο ''Elegy Of Blood'' το οποίο κυκλοφορεί στις 15 Μαΐου από την κυπριακή Pitch Black Records. Στο “Face The Mirror” και στο “Elegy Of Blood” βλέπουμε την τωρινή σύνθεση της μπάντας με την οποία είμαστε μαζί από το 2004 που εκτός από τον Ανδρέα και τον Γιώργο, είμαστε ακόμα εγώ στα τύμπανα, ο Αλέξανδρος Kωσταράκος στα φωνητικά και ο Θοδωρής Παραλής στο μπάσο. Σημαντικό κομμάτι της ιστορίας των Marauder είναι φυσικά τα αμέτρητα live shows που έχουμε κάνει όλα αυτά τα χρόνια και που πιστεύω ότι είναι και το σήμα κατατεθέν της μπάντας.
Ηλίας: Είστε ένα από τα πιο δυνατά ονόματα στο ελληνικό Heavy Metal. Πως βλέπεις τη φάση γενικά, τότε και τώρα;
Γρηγόρης: Kοίτα για την φάση στο ελληνικό Metal τότε και τώρα εγώ πάντα πίστευα ότι έχουμε καταπληκτικές μπάντες από όλα τα ειδή του Metal στην χωρά μας και ειδικά τα τελευταία χρόνια με χαροποίει ιδιαίτερα που ψαχνόμαστε πολύ στο θέμα της παράγωγης ενός cd με αποτέλεσμα να έχουν βγει πολύ δυνατές δουλείες από πολλές ελληνικές μπάντες. Aυτό ήταν το μονό μελανό σημείο σε σχέση με το παρελθόν δηλαδή η παράγωγη. Είμαι σίγουρος ότι υπάρχει πολύ μέλλον μπροστά μας αρκεί να στηρίξει και ο κόσμος την προσπάθεια και τα live που κάνουμε όλοι μας.
Ηλίας: Αν δεν κάνω λάθος 2 δίσκοι σας έχουν εξαντληθεί και επανακυκλοφορήσει απ'την Eat Metal Records, συν κάποια extraκομμάτια. Πιστεύω ότι είστε από τις λίγες ελληνικές μπάντες που έχει συμβεί αυτό. Ο κόσμος στηρίζει ακόμα ή έχει χαλαρώσει κάπως το θέμα;
Γρηγόρης: Ναι ήταν το ''Sense Of Metal'' και το ''1821'' που επανακυκλοφόρησαν, όπως επίσης το ''1821'' κυκλοφόρησε και σε βινύλιο από την ''Iron On Iron''. Κάτι βλέπω να ανακινείται στις συναυλίες και στο εξωτερικό το είδα ότι ο κόσμος αρχίζει να ξαναγουστάρει την αγορά CD και βινυλίου πάλι ενώ ένα διάστημα είχαν σταματήσει οι αγορές εντελώς με το downloading.
Ηλίας: Παρότι είχατε αρκετές αλλαγές στα μέλη σας ανά τα έτη, μείνατε δεμένοι σαν μπάντα και παραγωγικοί. Θες να μας πεις λίγα λόγια για το όταν ήρθες στη μπάντα και φυσικά, για τον νέο σας δίσκο που θα κυκλοφορήσει τώρα;
Γρηγόρης: Ο Ανδρέας και ο Γιώργος κράτησαν την μπάντα ζωντανή όλα αυτά τα χρόνια παρόλα τα πολλά προβλήματα που αντιμετώπισαν γιατί γούσταραν να παίζουν Heavy Metal!!! Tέλος!!! Έτσι ήρθαμε σε επαφή το 2004, δέσαμε πολύ σαν μουσικοί και πάνω απ'ολα σαν παρέα και έτσι συνεχίζουμε μαζί από τότε με ένα σκοπό. Αγάπη για τους Marauder και το Heavy Metal!!! Λοιπόν ο καινούργιος δίσκος ονομάζεται 'Elegy Of Blood', κυκλοφορεί από την Pitch Black στις 15 Μαΐου και πιστεύω ότι είναι ότι πιο δυνατό και επικό έχουμε κάνει από την εποχή του ''1821''. Θεωρείται concept album και αναφέρεται σε πολύ σημαντικές μάχες που έχουν γίνει στη ιστορία της ανθρωπότητας. Έχουμε δουλέψει παρά πολύ τόσο στις συνθέσεις όσο και στον τομέα της παράγωγης...
Ηλίας: Έχετε μείνει πιστοί στον παραδοσιακό Heavy Metal ήχο, ότι και αν σημαίνει αυτό για τον καθένα, σε μια εποχή που πολλές μπάντες ψάχνουν την συνεχή βελτίωση του ήχου τους με αποτέλεσμα πολλές φορές να «χάνεται η μπάλα». Ποιες είναι κυρίως οι επιρροές σας αυτό τον καιρό; Ποια είναι η κινητήριος δύναμη που ωθεί τους Marauder;
Γρηγόρης: Η κινητήριος δύναμη που ωθεί τη μπάντα σε αυτό που κάνει είναι η αγάπη για το Heavy Metal πολύ απλά. Δεν πρόκειται να αλλάξουμε κάτι, δεν αλλάξαμε τόσα χρόνια και δεν χρειάζεται άλλωστε. Οι επιρροές μας σαν άτομα δεν διαφέρουν πολύ για αυτό ταιριάζουμε και όλοι μας σαν μπάντα. Μιλάς άλλωστε και σε τύπους που η έννοια κλασσικό Heavy Metal είναι τρόπος ζωής!!! Το κλασσικό Heavy Metal άντεξε στο χρόνο και θα αντέχει για πολύ ακόμα.
Ηλίας: Υπάρχει μια τάση εδώ στην Ελλάδα να χαρακτηρίζουν πολλοί οπαδοί τις παραδοσιακές Heavy Metal μπάντες ως «γραφικές». Πιστεύεις ότι οι οπαδοί του κλασσικού ήχου είναι απαραίτητα κλειστόμυαλοι, ή ότι είναι γενικότερο θέμα νοοτροπίας της μάζας;
Γρηγόρης: Δεν χρειάζεται να μιλάμε για γραφικότητες και για κλειστόμυαλους. Όποιος τα λέει αυτά δεν ξέρει να απολαμβάνει αυτή τη μουσική που είμαστε τόσο τυχεροί που υπηρετούμε και κρίμα σε αυτόν!!! Classics never die άλλωστε!!!
Ηλίας: Έχετε προγραμματίσει μια συναυλία για τον νέο δίσκο στις 27 Μαΐου, μαζί με 4 άλλα ονόματα της ελληνικής σκηνής. Πες μας λίγα λόγια για αυτή τη συναυλία. Έχετε κανονίσει και κάποια άλλη για το καλοκαίρι ή όχι ακόμα;
Γρηγόρης: Ναι θα παρουσιάσουμε τον καινούργιο δίσκο στις 27 Μαΐου στο «Κύτταρο» παρέα με τους Dream Weaver, τους Ragenheart, τους Ιταλούς Martiria και τους Crusade Of Steel, όλες τους φοβερές μπάντες!!! Θα είναι σίγουρα πολύ καλό event και μακάρι να το στηρίξει ο κόσμος. Προς το παρόν δεν έχουμε κανονίσει κάποιο άλλο live, αλλά σίγουρα θα παίξουμε πολλά φέτος σε πόλεις τις Ελλάδας, κι ελπίζουμε και στο εξωτερικό.
Ηλίας: Πρόπερσι παίξατε στο διήμερο Power Of The Night Festival στην Κύπρο, μαζί με πολλές ελληνικές μπάντες, καθώς και την μπάντα του Ross The Boss μαζί με τον αδικοχαμένο Scott Columbus. Τι αναμνήσεις έχεις από εκείνο το φεστιβάλ; Γενικά υπάρχει άνοδος του Heavy Metal στην Κύπρο;
Γρηγόρης: Εντάξει για το live στην Κύπρο τι να πω; Ήταν όνειρο ζωής σαν ManOwaRας που είμαι να βρίσκομαι στο ίδιο ξενοδοχείο με τον Ross και τον Scott, απίστευτοι άνθρωποι και οι δύο… φοβερές στιγμές!!! Στην Κύπρο ζουν και αναπνέουν για το κλασσικό Heavy Metal!!! Απίστευτη οργάνωση από παιδιά που έχουν πολύ μεράκι όπως επίσης υπάρχουν και αρκετές φοβερές μπάντες στην Κύπρο. Υπάρχει πολύ άνοδος εκεί και μπράβο τους!!!
Ηλίας: Γενικά τη φάση του ίντερνετ και της γενικότερης φιλοσοφίας της «άμεσης πληροφόρησης» πως τη βλέπεις; Είναι περισσότερο ευχή ή κατάρα για τις μπάντες;
Γρηγόρης: Το Internet κακά τα ψέματα το χρειαζόμαστε όλοι πλέον, είναι πολύ χρήσιμο για τις μπάντες και για την μουσική. Μπορείς να διαφημίσεις κάτι πολύ γρήγορα και άμεσα να το δει ο οποιοσδήποτε κάτι που παλιά ήταν πολύ δύσκολο…
Ηλίας: Υπάρχει κάτι τελευταίο που θες να μοιραστείς μαζί μας;
Γρηγόρης: Ηλία σε ευχαριστώ πολύ για την δυνατότητα να πω κάποια πράγματα για τους Marauder. Εύχομαι καλή συνέχεια σε αυτό που κάνεις. Τι άλλο… support the Greek scene!!!
